Toe Spacers for Bunions, Overlapping Toes & Toe Drift
Frequently asked questions
-
Toe spacers gently separate crowded, overlapping, or drifting toes to reduce pressure, friction, and rubbing in shoes. This can calm irritation, help prevent corns between toes, and improve comfort with daily activities. A spacer may help realign a big toe and decrease a bunion prominence which may decrease pain.

Toe spacers are commonly used to help relieve discomfort from: • Bunions (big toe drifting toward the 2nd toe) , may help realign joint. • Hammer toes / claw toes (especially when toes rub) • Overlapping or crooked toes • Corns between toes and irritation from toe-to-toe rubbing • General toe crowding and pressure points in footwear
-
For bunions, a gel or foam spacer used between the big toe and second toe (an “interdigital wedge”). This type helps hold the big toe in a more functional position and can reduce rubbing at the bunion and between toes. The stay-put gel spacer will keep the spacer securely in place. But usually socks are enough to keep a spacer in place. Even better for some people: a bunion guard with an integrated spacer, which cushions the bunion bump and separates the toes.

Often, yes—especially for durability and long-term daily wear. But it depends on amount perspiration of your foot. Pros : Gel has a softer feel, conforms to toe shape, lasts longer than felt/foam, washable/reusable Cons: Can feel bulky in tight shoes; may feel tacky and if so sprinkle with talcum powder. -May create extra moisture of skin or maceration if you have sweaty feet. Foam (multi-layer) Lightweight, breathable , comfortable, good for shoe fit. Better for sweaty feet Typically wears out faster than gel; may compress over time.
-
Yes. They are designed to be washable and reusable. Gel options tend to outlast foam alternatives.

These terms are often used interchangeably, but here’s the practical difference: • Spacer/separator/spreader: usually sits between two toes • Toe comb / multi-toe separator: can separate multiple toes at once and may also act like a crest pad to lift/cushion toe tips or be reversed to keep pressure off the top of the knuckles.
-
A stay-put loop spacer has a soft loop that anchors around a toe so the spacer doesn’t slide around. This is helpful if: • You’re active (walking/exercise) • The spacer keeps migrating • You need consistent placement between specific toes
